HOW HIPAA AFFECTS YOUR PRIVACY

Over the past year, you’ve probably heard a lot about legislation designed to protect an individual’s personal health information. Known as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), this legislation provides standards for how Protected Health Information, or PHI, is collected, used and shared.

At Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware, the confidentiality of our customers’ information has always been important to us. This will continue to be our priority as we move forward under the HIPAA legislation.

The Privacy component of the HIPAA legislation went into effect on April 14, 2003. All organizations subject to HIPAA are now required to give customers a Notice of Privacy Practices, which outlines the uses and disclosures of PHI, describes an individual’s right to access this information, and details the organization’s responsibility to protect it. You can also contact Customer Service for a printed copy of the notice.
